Review: BlissLights Are a Smart Alternative to Traditional Holiday Lights

smart holiday lights

This holiday season, and when it's over, you will appreciate a product like the BlissLights FireFly ($139). Instead of risking life and limb stringing holiday lights, you simply stake the BlissLights in the ground, or use the tabletop base for inside use, and plug them in. Instantly, you have a beautiful, house-sized illuminated decoration. The BlissLights use lasers to project colored dots.

Yes, your local supermarket probably sells a cheap version, but my neighbors have one of those and the colors are muted and fuzzy. The BlissLights are sharp and distinct. No wonder they also sell versions to professional DJs, etc. The BlissLights will not end up in the garbage after one season. They are built to last and can be used indoors after the holiday. My kids are looking forward to using them in the basement or bedroom, come January.

The BlissLights are sold in assorted colors and they also sell "Motion" versions that make the display come to life. In addition to the predetermined color, there is a bright LED spotlight that can be turned on or off separately from the lasers, and can be set to a different color as well. All of this is controlled by a clever remote control. There is even a timer mode, where it stays on for 6 hours then off for 18.

One concern I have is that when you cut power to the device, it resets, so if you choose a color for the LED and plug it in to a smart outlet like the one from iDevices, it will default to the factory mode, which is lasers on plus LED on as white. That means you can't use HomeKit to control it if you want to use a color other than white. Not a big deal, because the remote control is flexible and it has the built-in timer mode.

  • Durable construction
  • Beautiful display
  • Assorted choices for color and motion
  • Clever remote control
  • Indoor or out

  • Resets when powered off, so limited HomeKit support
  • More expensive than the cheaply made as-seen-on-TV versions

Final Verdict

If you are looking for adding holiday lights that can be put up and taken down in seconds, and will last year after year, BlissLights will make your holiday blissful!
